It isused in modeling random phenomena and is indispensable ininvestigations involving uncertainty. The statistic that guidesthe Department of Physics and Mathematics (Universidadde Manizales -UAM) seeks the improvement in engineeringstudents, of stochastic thinking and understanding ofprobabilistic laws incorporating information technologies.A research instrument of previous ideas (IIP) was adopted fortwo purposes, first of all visualize stochastic preconceptionsand then, develop teaching units (DU) for teaching statistics.The three groups of IIP statistics was applied at the beginningand end of the semester II 2011 doing classroom interventiondesigned by UD. To compare results obtained, IIP was used inthree courses of I-2012 without using UD. With these resultscompare multinomial proportions, MANOVA and associationtests were performed in order to analyze the impact of theintervention.La estadística es una asignatura que presenta dificultad para llevarla a un nivel de entendimiento práctico. Se emplea en modelación de fenómenos aleatorios y es indispensable en investigaciones que involucran incertidumbre. La estadística que orienta el Departamento de Física y Matemáticas (Universidad Autónoma Manizales -UAM) busca mejorar en los estudiantes de ingeniería, el pensamiento estocástico y la comprensión de leyes probabilísticas incorporando tecnologías informáticas. En la investigación se adoptó un instrumento de ideas previas (IIP) con dos fines, primero visualizar preconceptos estocásticos y segundo desarrollar unidades didácticas (UD) para enseñanza de estadística. Este IIP se aplicó a tres grupos de estadística al inicio y al final del semestre II-2011 haciendo intervención de aula mediante UD diseñadas. Para contrastar resultados obtenidos se usó IIP en tres cursos del I-2012 sin emplear UD.
